THE PROBLEM Finding truly accessible housing is a big challenge people face worldwide. In Canada, we are fortunate to have accessibility laws in building codes, transportation and public infrastructure. However, the market for genuinely accessible independent homes is practically non-existent in Saskatchewan. Raising awareness and developing accessible real estate is a cause for which the Morrison ‘87 Real Estate team has felt called to raise funds.
WHAT IS ACCESSIBLE REAL ESTATE? Some physically restricted people don’t actually need aid because of their health concerns; it’s mainly because they are unable to perform day-to-day tasks with the standard equipment. What does accessible housing mean? It means that a person with physical disabilities can enjoy independent living without the help of a nurse or care aid. It doesn’t end with being able to perform tasks. It goes further. Accessible housing means it is possible to perform day-to-day tasks in a dignified and easy manner. What are some examples of equipment that can allow all-around accessibility? From the simple things like ramps, elevators, wider doors & hallways to things that not everyone thinks of, like lowered sinks with a tabletop overhang, crane systems, roll-in showers, etc.
